February marked the first anniversary since ransomware group BlackCat infiltrated UnitedHealth subsidiary Change Healthcare’s networks, beginning the largest healthcare data breach in U.S. history.

After exfiltrating patient data and encrypting files with ransomware, the attackers demanded—and UnitedHealth paid—a $22 million ransom, but this ultimately did not secure the compromised patient data. As UnitedHealth is the nation’s largest healthcare company, the subsequent recovery and restoration efforts have been massive and costly—and are still ongoing.
