How Saint Joseph Health System is making checking in more secure and accurate with biometric identification
Checking in to a hospital can be a long and tedious process, but palm vein biometric identification technology can make registration simple, saving not only time, but lives. This is exactly what Indiana-based Saint Joseph Health System realized when they decided to implement Imprivata PatientSecure across two of their campuses.
When patients check in to a hospital, there may be duplicate names on file, as well as dates of birth, making it difficult for the hospital to correctly identify them or find their correct medical history. By implementing Imprivata PatientSecure, a positive patient identification platform for healthcare, Saint Joseph can now ensure accurate patient identification at every point of entry or care.
With Imprivata PatientSecure, patients are identified by the veins in their palm. A person’s veins develop before birth and remain unique to each individual throughout their lifetime, even between twins. When a person places their hand on the palm vein scanner, a low infrared light scans the vein map in mere seconds. Not only is this beneficial at registration, but also in the ED or trauma center through the ability to identify unconscious patients.
In addition to improving registration and care, Imprivata PatientSecure offers protection to patients by identifying issues of potential insurance fraud, as well as identity theft.
