Imprivata Customer to Lead Discussion about Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances at Cerner Health Conference
Steven Zuber, MD, CMIO of Methodist Health System, to Outline DEA Requirements for e-Prescribing of Controlled Substances, the Benefits to Clinical Staff and Steps for EPCS Success
Lexington, Mass.—October 29, 2014—Methodist Health System (Omaha, Neb.) is one of the first health systems to enable electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) in partnership with Imprivata® (NYSE: IMPR) and Cerner. EPCS helps address the prescription drug abuse epidemic in America while also improving provider productivity for better focus on patient care. To highlight Methodist’s success with EPCS, Steven Zuber, MD, physician and chief medical information officer, will deliver a presentation at the Cerner Health Conference on November 4, 2014 at 2:45 p.m. CDT titled “Cerner EPCS (Electronic Prescribing Controlled Substance): Regulations and the Cerner Solution” (session #129).
“The inability to prescribe controlled substances electronically was a source of frustration for both physicians and patients. Writing paper prescription slows down clinicians and increases patient wait times at pharmacies while also introducing the potential for errors, inaccuracies and even forgeries,” said Dr. Zuber. “We implemented EPCS to address these issues, and our project has been a tremendous success. Using fingerprint biometric identification as well as tokens, both supported by Imprivata, we are able to give our providers flexibility for which two-factor authentication option fits their workflow. Prescribing controlled substances now takes just seconds, which improves provider productivity, increases patient satisfaction and puts stronger controls in place as compared to using paper prescriptions.”
In the session, Dr. Zuber will review the DEA requirements for EPCS, the benefits and the scope of work involved in implementing EPCS, including two-factor authentication solutions that meet both DEA compliance and clinical workflow requirements.
At the conference, Imprivata will also showcase its solutions for authentication and access management, secure communications and EPCS in booth #117. For more information or to schedule a meeting with Imprivata at the Cerner Health Conference 2014, please contact Imprivata.
