UMass Memorial Health Care Selects the Imprivata Security and Identity Platform to Combat Prescription Drug Abuse and Improve Clinical Workflow Efficiency

  • As opiate abuse climbs across the country, UMass Memorial commits to early adoption of EPCS to fight the epidemic through technology
  • UMass Memorial will deploy Imprivata’s secure signing for EPCS and single sign-on capabilities to allow for seamless integration with the hospital’s new Epic electronic health record

Worcester and Lexington, Mass.—June 14, 2016—Imprivata® (NYSE: IMPR), the healthcare IT security company, today announced that UMass Memorial Health Care has selected the Imprivata security and identity platform  to enable fast, secure electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) and improve authentication and access workflows with their new Epic electronic health record system.  UMass Memorial is deploying multiple products from the Imprivata security and identity platform including Imprivata Confirm ID™ for EPCS and Imprivata OneSign®.  Imprivata Confirm ID for EPCS effectively reduces fraud, drug diversion, and doctor shopping by providing clinicians with a secure platform to efficiently prescribe opiates electronically while meeting DEA requirements. Imprivata OneSign will help ensure secure and convenient access to the Epic electronic health records platform.

“We sought a new technology platform that could provide added security without increasing the administrative workload on our clinical staff, and we’re happy to have found it through our partnership with Imprivata,” shared Eric Alper, MD, vice president and chief clinical informatics officer for UMass Memorial Health Care. “We are also committed to combatting the current opioid abuse epidemic in this country, which has hit Massachusetts particularly hard. Technology like Imprivata Confirm ID will allow us to ensure that secure, safe electronic prescribing methods are utilized across our health system along with adding increased security to our core IT systems.”

Imprivata Confirm ID for EPCS delivers the industry’s most comprehensive platform for provider identity proofing, supervised enrollment of credentials, two-factor authentication, and auditing and reporting to help healthcare organizations meet the DEA requirements for EPCS. By integrating directly into leading EHRs and e-prescribing applications, and simplifying two-factor authentication through Hands Free Authentication, push token notification, and other DEA-compliant solutions, Imprivata Confirm ID for EPCS simplifies the EPCS workflow to drive provider adoption and improve patient care.

“EPCS has always been a challenge for hospitals to implement because existing modalities for two-factor authentication have been time consuming, challenging, and not well integrated into provider workflows,” said Omar Hussain, President and CEO of Imprivata. “Not only does the Imprivata security and identity platform integrate directly into existing clinical access and e-prescribing workflows, but it also gives providers fast, convenient two-factor authentication that meets DEA requirements.”

EPCS is allowed in all 50 states and several, including New York and Maine, have passed legislation to mandate it. Since New York mandated EPCS with the New Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing (I-STOP) law in March, the state has 66% of total prescribers enabled to electronically prescribe controlled substances and 84% are already electronically prescribing in general, according to Surescripts. In addition, 95% of New York pharmacies are able to accept prescriptions for controlled substances.

Mr. Hussain continued, “While Massachusetts has yet to make EPCS a requirement, we feel states are now increasingly looking at EPCS as a way to help combat opiate abuse as quickly as New York State has.”

In addition to enabling EPCS with Imprivata Confirm ID for EPCS, UMass Memorial Health Care will implement Imprivata OneSign to help drive adoption of their new EHR platform, protect sensitive patient information, and increase overall efficiency. Care providers need to authenticate their identity an average of 70 times a day, and are prompted each time to enter a username and password, which inevitably slows down the care process and distracts doctors and nurses. Imprivata OneSign will allow UMass Memorial clinicians to securely access the hospital’s new Epic EHR and improve clinician workflows by providing an end-to-end password management solution that incorporates single sign-on, authentication management, and virtual desktop roaming. Providers will simply tap a badge or swipe a fingerprint to gain access to patient information.
