Tap and Go

Tap and Go is a form of contactless authentication, such as the secure, No Click Access™ single sign-on (SSO) feature within Imprivata Enterprise Access Management (formerly Imprivata OneSign® and Imprivata Confirm ID). Tap-and-go is also used to authenticate users in contactless payment systems, key fobs for cars, and more.

Tap and go simplifies and secures the way users access important systems and applications. By leveraging near-field communication (NFC), radio-frequency identification (RFID), or Bluetooth technology, users are quickly authenticated by tapping a smart card, key fob, mobile device, etc. on a reader. This not only streamlines authentication, but it also enhances security by eliminating the need for traditional passwords, which are often the weakest link in an authentication chain.

Contactless authentication is particularly beneficial in healthcare settings, where every second counts, and login delays or system lockouts can jeopardize patient well-being. For example, a healthcare provider can tap their badge or mobile device to log into a workstation, access patient records, and perform tasks right when they are needed for patient care. This improves efficiency, while helping to maintain HIPAA compliance, which requires stringent access controls to protect patient data.

The functions that make contactless authentication so crucial in healthcare make it valuable in other industries as well. Not only does tap and go boost security, but it also enhances the user experience by reducing friction in the authentication process. Users no longer have to remember multiple complex passwords or go through multiple steps to log in. This can lead to increased productivity and satisfaction, as well as reduced help desk calls and other cost savings.
