Electronic logging device
An electronic logging device (ELD) is hardware used by transportation organizations to record essential operating data for commercial vehicles including trucks and buses. It relies on Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) to enable organizations to quickly and easily track and share this information, which includes miles and hours driven, as well as location.
The on-board logging device enables organizations to record and manage this information in order to comply with Department of Transportation Hours of Service (HoS) regulations. The main purpose of HoS regulations is to maintain safety by ensuring drivers do not exceed specific driving-time limits that can lead to fatigue and vehicular accidents.
Since 2017, organizations are mandated to remain compliant with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations HoS regulations for both property-carrying and passenger-carrying drivers, and over the years, states have aligned their regulations to comply with these ordinances to accurately record a driver’s record of duty status (RODS).
To help ensure the security and integrity of HoS data, many transportation organizations use authentication technology. Multifactor authentication provides a secure, auditable chain of trust wherever, whenever, and however users interact with various types of data. By connecting electronic logging devices with multifactor authentication applications, these devices can better support public safety, while avoiding substantial financial penalties resulting from HoS regulation non-compliance.
